Diving at Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island is a small uninhabited island off Bali's northwest coast, part of the West Bali National Park. It is widely considered to have the best wall diving in Bali, with dramatic drop-offs covered in stunning soft corals, sea fans, and sponges. The crystal-clear water regularly offers 30+ meter visibility, making it a photographer's paradise. The island's protected status means the reefs are pristine and teeming with life. While the drive from Canggu takes about 3.5 hours, the diving quality makes it absolutely worth the journey.

Our Menjangan day trip requires the earliest departure of all our trips -- usually around 5:00 AM. The 3.5-hour drive through the mountainous interior of Bali passes through a different world from south Bali's beach scene: highland temples, traditional villages, and dense forest. We arrange breakfast en route and arrive at the boat departure point on Bali's northwest coast by late morning. From there it is a short boat ride to the island.

The trip includes 2-3 dives at different points around the island, typically combining a dramatic vertical wall section with a more gentle sloping reef area. Given the rare nature of this trip and the distance involved, we strongly recommend planning a dedicated day for Menjangan rather than combining it with other dive sites.

Menjangan FAQs

Why is Menjangan considered the best wall diving in Bali?

Menjangan is protected as part of West Bali National Park, keeping the reef pristine and free from fishing. The walls are dramatic, the soft coral is exceptional, visibility regularly exceeds 30 meters, and the site is much less crowded than south Bali locations.

How early do we leave for Menjangan?

Departure is typically around 5:00 AM for the 3.5-hour drive. Despite the early start, most divers say the extraordinary diving is completely worth it. We arrange breakfast stops on the way.

Is Menjangan good for beginner divers?

Yes. Despite the vertical wall topography, Menjangan has gentle currents and calm, protected conditions. The walls start in shallow water, so Open Water certified divers can still experience the dramatic scenery at safe depths.

What other sites can I combine with Menjangan?

Menjangan is somewhat isolated in northwest Bali, so it is best as a dedicated day trip. We do not recommend combining it with eastern Bali sites. However, you can extend the trip with additional dives around the island if time allows.
