Diving in Tulamben
Home of the USAT Liberty -- one of the world's most accessible and iconic shipwrecks. A must-dive for every Bali visitor.
The USAT Liberty Wreck, Tulamben
The USAT Liberty is a 120-meter American cargo ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in January 1942 while carrying railroad parts and rubber. After being beached at Tulamben on Bali's northeast coast, a 1963 volcanic eruption from nearby Mount Agung pushed the ship off the beach into the water, where it now rests with the bow in just 5 meters and the stern at 30 meters depth.
Tulamben is a small fishing village on Bali's northeast coast that has become one of the world's top dive destinations thanks to the USAT Liberty wreck. This 120-meter World War II cargo ship lies just 30 meters from the beach at depths of 5-30 meters, making it accessible to snorkelers and divers of all levels. Beyond the wreck, Tulamben offers excellent macro diving at the Coral Garden and Drop Off sites, where you can find pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, and a stunning variety of nudibranchs. The black volcanic sand creates a dramatic backdrop for underwater photography.
Our full-day Tulamben trips depart early from your Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, or Sanur accommodation. The 2.5-hour drive through the stunning mountain and coastal scenery is a journey in itself. Upon arrival, we do 2-3 dives at the Liberty wreck and surrounding sites before a local lunch and the return drive in the afternoon.

Tulamben FAQs
What is the USAT Liberty wreck?
The USAT Liberty is a 120-meter American WWII cargo ship that rests just 30 meters from shore in Tulamben, northeast Bali. Torpedoed in 1942 and pushed into the sea by a 1963 volcanic eruption, it now sits at depths of 5-30 meters and is covered in spectacular coral and teeming with marine life.
Do I need Advanced certification for the Liberty wreck?
Open Water certification is sufficient to dive the Liberty wreck. The shallowest sections start at 5 meters. Advanced certification is only required for wreck penetration (entering the interior of the ship).
How early is the Tulamben departure?
We typically depart around 5:30-6:00 AM for a 2.5-hour drive. This gets us to Tulamben by 8:00-8:30 AM for optimal morning conditions and visibility before other dive groups arrive.
Can I combine Tulamben with Amed?
Yes! Amed is only 30 minutes from Tulamben, so we regularly combine both on the same day trip. You get the Liberty wreck and the Japanese wreck plus Jemeluk Bay coral garden all in one day.
