Nusa Penida sits 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur and offers diving experiences found nowhere else in Bali. The island's underwater terrain is shaped by strong currents that bring nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean, attracting large pelagic species including giant oceanic manta rays and the elusive mola mola (ocean sunfish).
Manta Point is the crown jewel of Nusa Penida diving. Located on the south side of the island, this cleaning station attracts manta rays year-round. Divers descend to 10-15 meters and wait on a rocky ridge while mantas with wingspans of 3-5 meters glide overhead. The experience of being eye-to-eye with these gentle giants is unforgettable.
Crystal Bay is famous as the best spot in Bali to see the rare ocean sunfish (mola mola) during season from July to October. Even outside mola season, Crystal Bay offers beautiful coral slopes, reef sharks, and crystal-clear visibility that lives up to its name. The entry is from a beach, making it accessible even for newer divers.
Toyapakeh is a colorful reef on the northwest side of Nusa Penida, offering calmer conditions than the south coast sites. The shallow coral gardens here are home to nudibranchs, frogfish, and beautiful hard coral formations. It is an excellent warm-up dive before heading to more challenging sites.
SD Point (named after the nearby school) is a drift dive along a wall covered in soft corals and sea fans. Reef sharks, eagle rays, and trevally patrol the blue water, while macro critters hide in the crevices. The current can be strong, making this an advanced dive.
For planning your Nusa Penida dive trip, we recommend a full day with 2-3 dives. Advanced certification is recommended for Manta Point and SD Point due to currents. Crystal Bay and Toyapakeh are accessible to Open Water divers in calm conditions. Water temperature ranges from 20-26C, so a 3mm wetsuit minimum is essential.
