Manta Ray Diving in Bali: Where, When, and How

7 min read2026-03-11

Manta Point at Nusa Penida is one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter giant oceanic manta rays. The cleaning station attracts mantas year-round, with the best encounters typically from April to November.

The dive at Manta Point is relatively straightforward: descend to 10-15 meters, settle on a rocky ridge, and wait. The mantas arrive to be cleaned by small wrasse fish that remove parasites from their skin and gills. Multiple mantas often visit simultaneously.

Manta rays at Nusa Penida have wingspans of 3-5 meters. They are completely harmless -- manta rays are filter feeders that eat plankton. The experience of watching these graceful creatures glide silently overhead is genuinely life-changing.

For the best encounter, we recommend: staying low and still on the reef (do not chase mantas), controlling your buoyancy to avoid stirring up sediment, being patient (they may circle multiple times), and keeping your group compact to avoid blocking their cleaning station.

Photography tips: wide-angle lens is essential (10-17mm fisheye or 10-22mm). Shoot from below looking up for dramatic silhouettes against the surface light. Strobes can be used but avoid blinding the mantas with repeated flashes.

Conservation note: Manta rays are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Indonesia declared a manta sanctuary in 2014, providing full protection to these magnificent animals. Responsible diving practices help keep them safe.

Our Nusa Penida manta trip is Rp 1.800.000 including speedboat, 2-3 dives, all equipment, guide, lunch, and hotel pickup from Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, or Ubud.
