Bali offers world-class experiences for both divers and snorkelers. The right choice depends on your comfort level, budget, time, and what you want to see.
Snorkeling advantages: no certification needed, suitable for all ages (including children), less equipment to manage, less expensive (Rp 500.000 for a half-day trip), you can still see turtles, coral, and tropical fish from the surface.
Diving advantages: access to deeper marine life (mantas, wrecks, walls), longer bottom time to observe creatures, sense of weightlessness and immersion, the thrill of breathing underwater, ability to see shy creatures that hide from surface noise.
Best snorkeling sites in Bali: Amed Jemeluk Bay (shallow reef with turtles), Tulamben Liberty wreck shallow sections (5-8m), Nusa Penida Crystal Bay (clear water, fish), Padang Bai Blue Lagoon (calm and clear), Menjangan Island (reef visible from surface).
Marine life comparison: snorkelers regularly see sea turtles, reef fish, coral, rays, and occasionally small sharks. Divers additionally see manta rays, mola mola, wreck interiors, nocturnal creatures, macro life, and deep reef species.
Our recommendation: do both. Snorkel on a free afternoon and book a dive trip for a dedicated day. If you only have time for one, and you are comfortable in water, try Discover Scuba Diving (1 day) for the full underwater experience.
