Surfing and Diving in Bali: How to Do Both

5 min read2026-02-16

Bali is one of the few places where world-class surfing and world-class diving coexist on the same island. Many of our guests are surfers who add diving to their Bali experience.

The key rule: do not dive and surf on the same day. Surfing after diving carries decompression risks (being tumbled in waves after absorbing nitrogen). Plan dive days and surf days separately.

A good weekly schedule: Mon/Wed/Fri surf, Tue/Thu dive, weekends flex. Or: front-load your diving (Mon-Wed) then switch to surfing (Thu-Sun) so there is no temptation to surf after a dive.

Canggu is the perfect base for this dual lifestyle: our dive shop is on the main strip, and the surf breaks (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa) are walking distance away. Many surf schools operate in the same area.

Physical considerations: both sports use shoulder muscles and core strength, so pace yourself. Diving early morning (5am departure) means you are back by mid-afternoon and can rest. Surfing the next morning uses different muscle groups if you vary your sessions.

Many surfers discover that diving gives them a whole new appreciation for the ocean they ride every day. Seeing the reef system beneath the waves changes your relationship with the water.
